Hi, Bill here. If you moved here from the mainland, or you've been reading up on backup power online, a lot of what you find won't really apply to us. California worries about wildfire shutoffs. Texas worries about ice storms. We have our own set of problems, and they call for a different setup.

Start with our electric bills. Hawaiian Electric rates are some of the highest in the whole country, so a lot of local families pay three, four, sometimes five hundred dollars a month just to keep the lights on. Any system that helps you use less grid power isn't a nice extra, it's real money back in your pocket every month.

Then there's our grid itself. It works hard, but it's old in a lot of places, and trade wind gusts, heat, and heavy demand can knock things out. Folks in Kalihi, Manoa, and plenty of neighborhoods on the Big Island know exactly what I mean. This isn't rare, it's just part of living on an island.

Hurricane season runs June through November here, every single year, not once in a while like some places on the mainland. When a storm does hit, outages can last several days, not a few hours. Your backup power needs to be built for that kind of stretch, not just a quick blip.

Our weather also flips fast. A calm morning can turn into a squall by afternoon, and salt air plus humidity wears down equipment that was never built for island conditions in the first place.
